Program Overview:
Feline urethral obstruction (FUO) is one of the most common urologic emergencies encountered in small animal practice. Most obstructions result from a combination of urethral inflammation, urethral plugs, crystalluria, and the naturally narrow distal penile urethra. Appropriate catheter selection may influence patient comfort, bladder irritation, and successful urinary drainage. Traditional tomcat catheters typically extend throughout the bladder; however, shorter catheter designs that terminate within the proximal urethra may reduce bladder irritation while maintaining adequate urinary diversion in selected patients. This talk will address outcomes associated with catheter length in a prospective pilot clinical study performed at a single veterinary hospital. Although additional studies with larger case numbers are warranted, these preliminary findings suggest that catheter design may influence urinary crystal clearance and could contribute to improved clinical management of feline urethral obstruction. The program will also address successful treatment which extends beyond catheter placement.
